Happy 2021, Portland! With a tough year finally behind us, many people are making resolutions to start the new year off on a positive note. Whether you plan to eat healthy, exercise or read more, there’s one resolution you will definitely want to keep – support local businesses! Portland’s neighborhood business districts are open and ready to help you meet your goals and live better in 2021. Here are a few ideas:
- Beaumont: Get some fresh air and exercise. Honest Training and The Refinery both host multiple outdoor workouts every day of the week. Try a juice cleanse with Happy Day Juice Co, which offers local delivery of cold-pressed juice, as well as an assortment of locally crafted goods.
- Central Eastside: Fix up that old bike. River City Bicycles has a full service department plus sales, espresso and an indoor test track.
- Foster: Break out your dancing shoes with Formation Studios. Virtual classes available for all levels, including Contemporary, Street Jazz, Burlesque and more. Practice self-care with acupuncture. White Phoenix offers Japanese-style acupuncture (among other alternative healing practices) on a sliding scale. Go vegetarian. Ditch the meat and find a variety of vegan and vegetarian meals at Off The Griddle.
- Gateway: Give back to your community. Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) has some great volunteer opportunities to be part of a diverse group and gain exposure to different areas of social services.
- Hawthorne: Eat healthier. Harlow has gluten-free, organic vegetarian fare and drinks. Maruti has health-conscious vegan and vegetarian Indian cuisine with gluten-free options.
- Historic Parkrose: Start a new home improvement project. Parkrose Hardware has everything you need to beautify your home and garden in the new year.
- Lents: Commit to good dental hygiene. Atlas Dental has several COVID safety precautions in place, plus TVs on the ceiling to watch while you’re getting a cleaning! Volunteer for a greener, more sustainable and just community. Support the work of Green Lents by volunteering in their Community Tool Library or Orchard, helping with their social media, or lending your bookkeeping expertise.
- Midway: Try a new sport. Disc Golf Depot is the largest Disc Golf Shop in the Pacific Northwest, with over 30 years of experience.
- Multnomah Village: Read more. Annie Blooms Books is offering curbside pickup, local delivery (within 3 miles), and shipping. Learn a new skill. Northwest Wools has everything you need to start knitting, crocheting, spinning and felting with natural fibers and yarns.
- Pearl District: Expose yourself to art. Portland Center Stage at the Armory has multiple streaming offerings including musicals, panel discussions and workshops. Portland’s oldest art walk, First Thursday, continues virtually. Check padaoregon.org for upcoming events.
- St. Johns: Take up a new hobby. Cathedral Park Performing Arts Collective, Vibe and St. Johns Clay Collective host workshops on everything from ukulele, pottery, improv and more. Keep your mind and body healthy with yoga. Check out the online offerings at Hot Home Yoga and Shanti Om Yoga.
- Stadium District: Reduce, reuse and recycle. Scrap is a nonprofit that encourages creative reuse and sustainability by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community.
